New York City Discovers the Nashville Predators and Friday Updates

The Nashville Predators have spent the week in the New York City area for the first time in several years and will play the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center in New Jersey for the first time since the facility opened in the 2007-2008 season.

The New York City media has embraced the Predator's visit to be Big Apple with coverage of the team as if they were some type of novelty, which in a sense they are since they rarely visit. It has been amazing to me what a big stir the Pred's first trip to New York has caused.

It is surprising that NHL Live studio is still standing after they had five Predator representatives as guests on yesterday's show. In the first hour they had Ryan Suter and Shea Weber together and then had Barry Trotz separately. In the second hour they took a great risk in having Pete Weber and Terry Crisp for a segment. Go here to listen to the entire show.

I think part of the reason that we are considered so much of a "nontraditional market" is that the team rarely makes it to Toronto, Montreal and New York which are the hubs of the big hockey media.

The Predators enjoyed their visit to New York as much as as anyone, taking in all the sites around Manhattan, enjoying the restaurants, and even making it to the taping of the David Letterman show.

Turn about was fair play for the Preds as they got to experience a fun time on the road as much as the other visiting teams enjoy coming to Nashville to take in the local culture here.

In Pred Land...

John Glennon has an article about the return of Colin Wilson and also indicates that Jerred Smithson and Marcel Goc would not play tonight. He also has notes about the updated paid attendance figures and that Zach Parise will be able to play tonight for the Devils. Also, he has the Game at a Glance.

Dirk Hoag has a far reaching article on the Pred's attendance and revenue sharing from the NHL. This is a great example of well researched balanced reporting.

In preparation for tonight's game, Chris Burton asks Five Questions to a Devil's Blogger. Chris also has the game day preview at OnTheForecheck.

Comments directly from Sully on Twitter the day after he hit the wall hard trying to prevent an icing call @Sullivan26: "The way my body feels this morning.... i'm voting YES for automatic icing!"

Barry Trotz talks about the Olympics at NHL All Access Vancouver.

Fanhouse has the story about Joel Ward's roller hockey days.

Paul McCann has thoughts about the Preds win over the Rangers and a few other things.

From NJ.com on Thursday comes word that Zach Parise and Bryce Salvador will both be in the lineup tonight against the Predators. Here is a game preview from In Lou We Trust.

Around the NHL...

The Oilers won for the first time in two months on the road and the Kings finally lost in a shootout after nine straight shootout wins.

Things got much closer in the Western Conference as Dallas beat Calgary and moved into a tie for ninth with the Wings. The Preds now have four teams within four points as they sit in seventh place.

From Vanity Fair (of all places) is the story of Jack Johnson being the only Team USA player walking the opening ceremonies at the Olympics. I've had a new respect for Johnson ever since I heard this.

Scott Burnside has an exhaustive piece on the importance of the Olympics to Team Canada.

NBC explains their position on Olympic hockey to Puck Daddy.

This is a story where Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban appears to have an interest in lining up new ownership for the Stars. He was also on XM204 discussing the matter on Thursday.

Donald Brashear has been put on waivers by the Rangers and has requested a trade. The Rangers signing him in the off season was never a good idea.

Puck the Media raises a few questions about shenanigans at Versus over post Olympic coverage. For those worried about the NHL Network during the Olympics, here is some news.

The other Pond Hockey Championship is this weekend on Dollar Lake in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Hopefully they will not get flooded out like the one in Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago.

It's time to make your weekly #SaturdayNHLpicks on Twitter.

Another interesting technology from Lexy.com. Eklund calls this the twitter of podcasting. It is a simple little program where you call from your phone and talk and then it shows up on the internet. Here is Eklund's widget with his latest. I'm thinking there may be a POTG Lexy in the near future.

More Later...
